Our talented Manor Works Painting team recently finished a fun, asymmetrical, striping in a sitting area. Our team believes interior paint color reflects your personality. It is a wonderful way to make your home feel custom. Creativity can be achieved with accent walls, tinted ceilings and colored trim. Another wonderful way to bring creativity to your walls is with striping. Read below and see our process. Creative process: Our talented foreman got to work closely with our artistic client. Working alongside Allison Shortmeyer interiors, they came up with the perfect, unique design. Allison helped choose the perfect contrast for our striping: Benjamin Moore Silver Mist 1619 as background color and Benjamin Moore Wescott Navy 1624 for stripes. Benjamin Moore Simply White was used for the ceiling, trim and doors. Painting Preparation: Preparation is key to a great paint job. Our painters carefully moved furniture, covered the floors with plastic, sanded and prepped walls. All nail pops are taken care of at this point as well as any cracks. You do not want wall imperfections to distract from your carefully chosen paint color and design. Paint Choice Our team used Regal Benjamin Moore paint. This paint is very high in quality. Regal Paint is available in five finishes, including flat, eggshell, pearl, matte and semi-gloss, as well as a full spectrum of colors. Our Manor Works project used Matte on the walls. The trim was painted in a Regal semi gloss finish. Our paint was purchased from our local store Evolution Paint in Ashburn Virginia. Once the Benjamin Moore Silver Mist background color was painted and dry the fun began. Precise measurements were taken for the striped design. The stripes were taped off on an angle to create a visual drama. Two coats of the Wescott Navy paint were carefully applied. The tape was removed, angling away from the freshly painted area. The end result… a unique room that looks like a funky piece of art. photo credit: katyhayesphotography

Dreaded Wall Scuffs Few things transform the interior of a home like a fresh coat of paint. Everything looks clean and fresh, crisp and uniform. Unfortunately, scuff marks can appear and accumulate at a surprising rate, especially in high-traffic rooms. There are two ways that you can leave a hideous wall scuff. When brushing up against a wall with shoes or a piece of carried furniture, the item leaves a residue behind. Paint sheens vary in their ability to withstand cleaning; high quality paint, glossier paints and oil-based paints have a higher scrub resistance, meaning that residue left by a scuff can usually be cleaned off. The second kind of scuff mark is not a result of color transfer from the moving object; rather, it is damage to the actual paint film. Even if paint is not actually scraped away or scratched off, the color can be harmed by abrasion, especially on low-sheen finishes such as flat and matte. The problem is that low-sheen finishes contain microscopic hairs which stand on end and absorb light so that the surface does not reflect. When an object bumps or abrades the wall with enough force, these tiny hairs are broken or flattened. When this occurs, more light is reflected from the affected areas, causing a visibly discolored spot or a scuff-mark. This is very common with builders grade, flat paint. Repaint with a high quality product If your walls are looking beat-up or have damaged spots, repainting with high quality paint is the best course of action. It will last longer and will withstand traffic, cleaning, and touch ups. We stand behind Benjamin Moore and Sherwin William paints and can recommend the right finish/product line for your home. If you live in northern Virginia, suburban Maryland, or the DC Metropolitan area, Manor Works is a great choice for your repair and repainting needs. Why should I hire Manor Works for my interior project? There are many answers to that question, but one of the biggest reasons customers cite is our complimentary color consultation service. Our customers know they are going to get a high quality paint job. What our customers want is someone who can come in and advise them on how to redesign their home. They often know what they want but they don’t know how to get there. Sometimes an owner is hesitant to choose color. They fear color will hurt their resale ability. Nothing could be further from the truth. While the “wrong” colors can reduce the attractiveness of a home, professionally chosen and applied colors will enhance the architectural features. Instead of a color like “builders white” which will hide features like crown molding, the right combination of colors will enhance the positives that naturally exist in a home. The perfect professionally designed palette can take a paint job from a simple refresh to a home transformation. Our Complimentary Color Consultations We have partnered with award winning interior designers as well as a professional Sherwin Williams color specialist to bring you the very best color consultation experience. #allisonshortmeyerinterios #amandavanroyinteriors #sherwinwilliams Our color consultants have extensive experience working with both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams paints. We take furnishings, decor and lighting into consideration. The emphasis is how the right colors can transform a home into a showcase. There are many reasons that paint can fail sooner than expected, but the main causes of premature paint failure fall into two categories: environmental factors and quality of paint job. Because the environmental dynamics are outside of our control, the emphasis needs to be on giving your house top-quality care to ensure the longevity of a paint job. While humans have been known to damage the environment, it is not usually a one-sided battle: the forces of nature can wear down and destroy almost anything we make, including paint. Precipitation, ultraviolet rays and temperature change are the slow-destroyers of a home’s beauty. Rain, freezing rain and sleet can wear down a paint finish prematurely, leaving it dulled and less protected. UV rays from the sun can cause a paint film to break down, resulting in chalking. The more direct sunlight a surface receives, the more likely the paint will fail prematurely. Even if the paint does not chalk, ultraviolet light will cause the paint to fade. Typically, darker colors appear to fade sooner than lighter colors. Temperature change is the most harmful force against paint. At high temperatures the paint film expands, as well as the surface beneath it. At low temperatures the opposite happens. Often the paint and the subsurface expand and contract at different rates, causing stress in the finish. At first this will appear in hairline cracks. These small fractures will eventually become larger, causing the paint film to lift away from the subsurface, bubbling, flaking, and peeling off in sheets. A quality paint job will last much longer than a budget job. Insufficient surface preparation will mean that paint does not adhere and cover as required, and it is likely to peel off long before it should. Even future layers of paint can be damaged by this, and these poorly applied coats will continue to fail. Also, some types of water-based paints cannot be applied over oil-based products, and this could also cause premature failure. Product choice can also affect paint longevity. Oil-based products are used for their hard finish, but this quality also makes the more brittle. While latex and acrylic products will stretch and flex like a rubber band, oil-based products will develop hairline cracks that grow with time. Also, the cost of a paint is a significant consideration in its life-expectancy. 85% of the cost of a gallon of paint is for the raw materials used. Expensive paints contain more high-quality ingredients, raising the cost but increasing the long-term value with a longer life. Cheaper paints will require more coats to obtain good color coverage, and they will also fail sooner. A final aspect of paint endurance is the number of coats. One coat will sometimes look sufficient when it is applied, but it is not likely to last as it should. Two coats will usually look much better, and will always last longer. It is important to remember that short term savings often lead to much bigger (and more expensive) problems. If the paint on your home is failing sooner than it ought, it is a good idea to hire a painting contractor that can diagnose the cause of the problem and will do a thorough job correcting it. This will ensure that your next paint job, and all those afterwards, will shine like it should. In suburban Maryland and northern Virginia, Manor Works is the contractor to contact for a paint job that excels in elegance and permanence. Everyone knows the phrase, “Nothing lasts forever.” Styles change, colors fade, technology becomes obsolete, and things wear out.
